One of my favorite things to do is putting Scripture to music for kids. Singing a verse can make Bible memorization quite easy. Think about all the songs you were taught as a child that you can still sing. You have that information stored in your mind. You need to learn the alphabet and it’s fun to be able to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” but you may really want your child to learn biblical stories too.
A simple melody can mesh well with Bible verses and become children’s Bible songs, solidifying God’s word in your heart and mind. But how does one get started putting Scripture to music?
I use the following 5 tips when writing my own Scripture music:
Find rhyming words. Bible verses do not always rhyme, but Scripture can be poetic. When coming up with a melody line, you can then use this rhyming pattern to your advantage.
Think of what the main word, or phrase is in the particular Bible verse you are considering. Since the word “gave” was the main one for me from John 3:16, I emphasized this word when I turned the verse into a song. Repeating the verse made it stand out as i wished when set to the melody. You can also accompany the song with fun motions.
In the cases where there are no rhyming words, just repeat the melody line. Biblical passages don’t usually feature rhyming. Therefore what can be done is to divide the verses lineage, which fits well inside a melodic line, as it repeats. It is the melody, not the words, that “rhymes” in this case.
The melody line should portray the emotions you want to express. An upbeat tune or more of a lullaby, is it needed by you? What feelings do you want to convey and what goes with your verse? The feelings you get from the hymn will help it adhere to your memory.
Lastly, the reference to the verse must be added. When you write a Scripture song, it is very important to include the “address” of the Bible verse. Getting creative, can be easily done by you here. It isn’t necessary to place it in the final line of the tune. It can be put first or in the midst of the song.
