Quick Guide to Rosh Hashanah

For 2010 / 11
Rosh Hashanah - September 19th

While most people believe that Rosh Hashana is a festival that marks the creation of the universe, some maintain that this holiday actually marks the creation of man. This would mean that the universe was created five days before that, or 25th Elul.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year festival and is celebrated in September or October, occuring on the first and second days of Tishri.

Sometimes the festival is known as Yom Ha-Zikkaron, which translates as ‘Day of Rememberance’.

For Jews, the New Year is a spiritual time when relationships with God can be repaired. The festival is also a time to remember the responsibilities of being God’s chosen people.

{One signifyer of the festival is the shofar blast, which is emitted from the Synagogue 100 times. This is a reference to Leviticus The shofar blast is one of the signifiers of this festival - 100 blasts being emitted from the Synagogue as a reminder of Leviticus 23:24.| Traditionally, a hundred blasts are sounded from the shofar, which harks back to Leviticus 23:24 (shown below)

23:24 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh
month, in the first [day] of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.

The Shofar is a horn made from a ram’s horn, and is traditionally used to mark the beginning of festivals. The use of the Shofar for this purpose goes back to the very beginning of Judaism and also is used to announce a new moon, for Shabbat, and also to mark the last day of fasting on Yom Kippur.

Some popular food that’s eaten includes apples and bread dipped in honey; the sweet food is meant to signify a sweet new year. One other thing to be eaten is the Challah bread which is round and symbolises the cyclical nature of the year.Fish and pomegranates are also traditionally eaten.
