As it is commonly known, mastering public speaking causes more fear, concern and stress than just about anything else we ever have to do.
And what makes it even worse?
Public speaking is performing in front of others and you are only as good as your last performance.
And it’s a performance isn’t it?
You are not just chatting. You want a good memory, you want to have a strong voice, you need to have the right body language and be prepared for any question thrown at you.
Yet mastering public speaking can be simple, if you ignore all the Public Speaking guidelines and rules.
Let me ask you a question :
When you’re in public speaking, what are you attempting to do?
What was your answer?
What did the tiny voice in your head say?
Get a point across?
Sell something?
How about, simply communicate?
Then add to that a little bit of passion and commitment and thatis it, isn’t it?
So can you do that?
Naturally, you can. You do that each day when you talk with your buddies.
You don’t fear anything when you talk with your chums, do you?
And I bet you can get real obsessed, often.
So this fear thing is all in our minds.
Here are some concepts which will help you when mastering public speaking.
Firstly, another question, if I may.
It’s all questions, so far, isn’t it?
But just another, please.
Have you ever attended a public speaking course or read a public speaking book?
Most folks have and now I would like you to forget and throw away every thing that you learned.
Because mastering public speaking means breaking some of the rules.
And on courses or in books you are usually only taught the rules.
So, for instancethe books will say, Don’t put your hands in your pockets. The audience won’t like it.
I say, if you want to put your hands in your pockets, do it.
Courses will say write your speech on those tiny cards and take them onto the stage with you.
I say, junk them.
Courses will say stand behind a lectern.
I say, get out from behind that lectern, we would like to see you.
So this is what I might endorse to make your displays stand-out.
When you walk out onto the stage, walk with enthusiasm.
Dress smartly. That’s’s doesn’t mean a suit and tie or a business suit. Just means be groomed and not scruffy.
Look round the whole room and have eye contact.
Don’t use PowerPoint unless your goal is to send the audience to sleep.
Don’t be perfect. Perfect displays are D-U-L-L, dull.
Be super obsessed about your subject.
If you’re making a mistake, and the fans giggle or laugh, giggle along with them as it’ll help you engage with the fans.
So dump the public speaking course or book guidelines, start mastering public speaking and wow the fans.
